    • Abstract:
      The article discusses the issue of abortion and examines discourse on choice, rights, and life which is used to defend or criticize abortion. The author examines a class which she has taught on bioethics in Japan and looks at the history of campaigns for and against abortion in the U.S. and in Japan. She suggests that the Japanese ethical framework used to discuss abortion, which discusses family welfare, the social good, and the environment in which a child would be raised, is frequently not examined in U.S. discussions of the topic.
